With so many lakes, rivers, and reservoirs near the Inn at Lake Joseph, it’s no surprise that fishing is a popular activity with our guests. Catskills fishing is an excellent way to pass the time and have some fun out on the water, whether staying close and fishing Lake Joseph or visiting other bodies of water for a special catch.
For fishing in Lake Joseph, please note that it is a catch and release system and that we do have four rowboats on the lake for your use free of charge. Our waters are predominately populated by bass but you’ll also catch perch, crappies, sunfish, and pickerel.
You can bring your own fishing gear or purchase some equipment at the nearby Walmart. Walmart issues fishing licenses which are required for any fishing activity. Fishing licenses are also issued at the Monticello Town Hall or online through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Annual permits are $25 for residents aged 16 – 69 and $50 for nonresidents. Visitors can also buy a seven-day pass for $28 ($12 resident) or a one-day permit for $10 ($5 resident). The state offers reduced pricing or even free permits for active duty military, senior citizens, and military veterans with 40% or more disability.
For a different lake fishing experience, our guests like to head up to White Lake, about 20 minutes from our inn. Stocked every spring, White Lake is home to smallmouth and largemouth bass, brown and lake trout, pickerel, and panfish.
About a 15-minute drive from the Inn at Lake Joseph is the popular fishing spot at Swinging Bridge Reservoir. At the reservoir you’ll catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, brown bullhead, yellow and white perch, common carp, brown trout, and walleye. An extra permit is required for reservoir fishing through the Department of Environmental Protection but it is free!
